Flatscreen Furniture a home for your tv and more!

Story Highlights
  • “I want to give my customers units that will house their televisions appropriately.”
  • “I love what I do and my favourite part of the job is at the end when the unit is installed and the customer sees the item for the first time and they are happy with the end result!”

With more than 20 years of cabinet making experience and 15 years of sales/management in the electrical retail trade, David Shaw is the designer, manufacturer and installer for every single Flatscreen Furniture unit and every unit is designed and made especially for the customer.

The concept for Flatscreen Furniture came about more than 15 years ago when David was tired of seeing the first wave of flat screen televisions disappointing their new owners. Customers spent good money on new TVs, brought them home and expected their living room to be transformed into a stylish interiors magazine picture.

Those with the budget and time spent another fortune chasing cables through walls and getting mixed results, often leaving themselves at the mercy of connections changing in the future and having to do it all again a few years later. Everyone else either put their new TV on the same chunky unit their old one had been on or bought some budget flat pack option to somewhat satisfy the need – very few were truly happy with their end results.

In 2004, he designed and made the first Flatscreen Furniture unit. It was little more than a large box that hung on the wall with a glass shelf poking through it and a 40″ (huge at the time) TV on the front.

People loved it! In the time since, with multiple word of mouth orders, the designs have been refined and are now finally available to anyone in Ireland that wants one.

The mission of this company is to hide cables, reclaim space whilst looking good doing it!
“I make units specific to the customers needs and I have yet to make the same unit twice. The unit is bespoke for the customer and I will always do my best to come in on budget,’’ said David Shaw.

“I want to give my customers units that will house their televisions appropriately. I can also make freestanding units as well as the more modern units. I can also make two tone units with shelves that can be used for ornaments.

“I love what I do and my favourite part of the job is at the end when the unit is installed and the customer sees the item for the first time and they are happy with the end result!

I always say that none of the units will make Coronation Street any better but it will make it a bit more enjoyable,’’ he enthused, laughing.

As to the future of Flatscreen Furniture?

My plan for 2022, is to make the design process even easier for customers. I have basic designs that are customisable so I’m building a section on my website with these units where the customer can customise it to their own size, choose their finish or type of wood and the amount of shelving in it. There will also be the option if they want matching shelving units elsewhere. I will, of course, continue with the bespoke units too, he concluded.
