It is my opinion that working in the construction industry is an excellent option for men and women

Our favourite builder talks about opportunity knocks, the new series of Home Rescue and remembering his mentor, Hughie Reilly.

Story Highlights
  • "The construction industry allows people to choose whether they want to be self employed or directly employed."
  • "I will be forever grateful for what Hughie did for me."

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Construction workers at this moment are as rare as a precious jewel . The current demand for construction workers is outweighing the number of available workers. This is due to the perfect storm of the current Housing crisis, the pent up demand for works to be completed due to COVID and the fact that a lot of people have money and are willing to spend it on their homes. Add to this the fact that material costs have risen dramatically, we really are in very unusual and unpredictable times.

The one thing that has stayed consistent for a long time is that the construction industry is short of labour resources. To put it simply, the construction industry needs more workers. This has created a great opportunity for young people to get a trade or any other construction qualification which will pretty much guarantee them a solid career with lots of options.

A career in construction is unique in that it gives you the opportunity to learn your qualification while getting paid. A construction career is also a genuine opportunity to start making good money much earlier than possible in other industries.

When you have a trade or a construction qualification, you basically have a ticket to travel and work in many different countries around the world with the security and likelihood of an immediate start no matter where you choose to go.

The demand for construction workers is a global issue that allows people in our industry to be very flexible when it comes to where and with whom they choose to take employment. It is my opinion that working in the construction industry is an excellent option for men and women, of all walks of life once they are willing to work hard and are qualified.

The construction industry allows people to choose whether they want to be self employed or directly employed which allows people of all mindsets and personalities to choose their own path . So young people take my advice and get a construction qualification knowing that you have given yourself multiple options in your career both home and abroad.

Humans will always need shelter and why not get out there and make a career out of providing this shelter & making some dreams come true along the way. I love working in construction and always will!

NEW HOME RESCUE SHOW COMING SOON

I’m delighted to say that the New Home Rescue Show is back on the screens from Thursday, 28th October on RTE2.

This season the show is going to be one hour long and is being tagged as β€˜The Big Fix.’ More declutters, more makeovers and more drama of course! So TUNE IN ?

RIP MY MENTOR – HUGH REILLY

The man who gave me my start in construction passed away last month. Hugh Reilly gave me the opportunity to serve a Carpentry apprentice under him and his brother Paddy.

I will be forever grateful for what Hughie did for me. He taught me about building but more importantly about integrity, work ethic and honesty in life. Rest in Peace Hughie and thank you for everything!
