- "The systems we design and install often eliminate customers’ energy bills entirely."
PowerCon Solar, led by founder Jim Connolly, has made a mark in the solar energy sector through both engineering expertise and dedication to customer-focused design. With a background as a qualified Volkswagen Group Master Technician, Jim decided to shift careers in 2017, completing an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. His passion for renewable energy grew during his studies, particularly after his thesis explored the financial returns of residential solar power and storage systems, taking his own house as a case study. “The numbers looked good!” explained Jim, who installed a system in his own home, and then launched PowerCon Solar, initially serving neighbours and past customers of Jim Connolly Motors who appreciated his expertise and commitment to quality. Since then, word of mouth and a reputation for high quality, reliable work has grown the business to where it is now.
PowerCon Solar specialises in designing and installing solar panel and battery systems for residential, commercial, and agricultural properties. Their installations offer numerous benefits, from reducing household bills to helping clients achieve a smaller carbon footprint. Jim’s mechanical engineering background brings a unique edge to their services. “We put a lot of thought into the design of each client’s system,” he says, emphasising that PowerCon doesn’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, each system is crafted to maximise energy production based on the customer’s specific needs and roof capacity.
An average installation by PowerCon Solar consists of around 18 440 watt (7.92KW) solar panels, significantly higher than the industry average. Unlike companies that aim for fast, small-scale installations, PowerCon takes the time to ensure clients receive systems tailored for optimal performance. “We have a high percentage of customers that end up with no energy bill whatsoever,” Jim proudly notes. While not every property can eliminate energy costs due to space or high consumption, PowerCon strives to get as close as possible.
Looking to the future, PowerCon Solar aims to double its business over the coming year. Currently, the team completes about four installations a week, with plans to increase this to eight or nine as demand rises. The company’s commitment to high-quality, thoughtfully engineered solar solutions is a driving force behind its growth plans, as Jim believes that scaling up will help improve both efficiency and accessibility for a broader range of customers.
