Architectural wizard Ronan Sweeney of Ronan Sweeney Design Studio discusses a ‘bungalow bliss type house renovation,’ in Kildare

Story Highlights
  • “Everyone is a lot more conscious of design now and with a bit of vision between designer and client, we can turn any existing poorly designed house into a beautiful family home."
  • “We incorporated some nice double height spaces into the design as well as a mezzanine."

Ronan Sweeney Design Studio, based in Newbridge, County Kildare is a young and vibrant architectural practice founded in 2015 after more than 14 years practising as an architectural technician for another well known architectural/ engineering firm in Kildare.

As a young and aspiring architectural firm based in the Kildare area, this practice has been creating stunning structures that shine. They are passionate about what they do and know that what matters most is the vision of their clients.

“Our clients purchased this 1980’s ‘bungalow bliss,’ type of property without ever living in it, so there was no emotional attachment to the house. It was a very standard layout and when you walked in the front door, you were greeted with dark narrow corridors leading to undersized rooms. The main living areas were also quite dark, with no real connection to the garden or consideration given to where the natural light was’’ said Ronan Sweeney.

“The house wasn’t very pleasing to look at from the front either so they were some of the challenges that we faced and we got a very detailed brief from the clients who knew what they wanted from the off. There was an existing garage to the side of the house and we demolished that. We constructed a one and a half storey extension to the side of the property but the real difficulty was renovating and reconfiguring the existing building that was there in order to make it attractive from the busy road to the front.

“Everyone is a lot more conscious of design now and with a bit of vision between designer and client, we can turn any existing poorly designed house into a beautiful family home. The brief was really quite simple but detailed as we focused on what was required more so than what was there.

“Maximising solar gain, providing quality connections to the large garden area and improving the flow of the house were the main topics of discussion when we sat down to start the design process.”

“Sustainable design is very important to us at the Design Studio. We managed to improve the BER rating from an E to an A3 rating which will significantly help our clients with future running costs of the house. “

“We are very happy with the final designs and quality of construction on this house. The house flows very well and we incorporated some nice double height spaces into the design as well as a mezzanine which overlooks the living area and also takes in views of the garden. The project was finished in the second half of 2021. We are getting a great reaction to this project especially from people who currently live in ‘bungalow bliss’ type homes and who may be feeling a little bit stuck in relation to what they can do with their property.

The contractor, Coughlanstown Construction, was excellent to work with throughout the build. I really enjoyed working on this project as the clients were great to work with, the contractor was brilliant and it made the project very enjoyable to work on. The clients were very enthusiastic and they were open to ideas. Everyone that was involved with this project really enjoyed it and they came up with some good ideas which all worked out really well, finished Ronan Sweeney
