- “I never have a preconceived idea of what the final house will look like, I let the idea evolve so innovation can shine through."
Fergus Flanagan studied and worked abroad for a total of 12 years. He cut his teeth in Germany, before deciding to move home and establish a practice. Fergus returned to Ireland with a fresh perspective. One striking observation upon his return was how Irish architecture often overlooked the country’s rainy climate. This realisation led to a distinctive design feature that has become a hallmark of some of his work: outdoor covered terraces with fireplaces, which have proven to be the most used and cherished spaces in his clients’ homes. The firm has made a name for itself in the industry, winning numerous accolades, including the prestigious Architect of the Year award, both in 2019 and 2023. Fergus attributes their success to the trust and vision of their clients, stating, “We’re only as good as our clients let us be.”
One standout project that exemplifies the firm’s expertise is the renovation of a Georgian house in Ballsbridge. Fergus and his team meticulously preserved the historical character of the front while integrating a modern, open-plan space at the back. The result is a seamless blend of Georgian elegance and contemporary design, featuring concealed door panels and bedrooms that overlook a beautiful courtyard. This project highlights the firm’s ability to respect historical architecture while infusing it with modern elements to meet the client’s needs.

In recent years, the firm has expanded its operations with a new office in Dún Laoghaire. Emphasising accessibility and community engagement, the office features a large shop front on Upper George’s Street, always welcoming of drop ins. This move back to a physical office space, contrary to the remote work trend, has proven beneficial, fostering closer relationships with clients – a lot of the firm’s projects are within 5 minutes walking distance of the office.
The evolution of technology in the industry has also enhanced the firm’s capabilities, particularly in working with international clients. Advanced 3D visualisation software allows clients to experience realistic simulations of their designs, facilitating seamless communication and collaboration regardless of location. A notable example is a recently completed house in Kerry for a couple residing in Australia. Through drone shots, Zoom meetings, and 3D visuals, Fergus Flanagan Architects delivered a finished home without ever meeting the clients in person until the project’s completion, where they could move immediately into a finished house.
For Fergus, the most rewarding aspect of his work is the design process itself. He approaches each project without a preconceived notion of the final outcome, allowing the design to evolve naturally. This philosophy, combined with a commitment to innovative, client-focused solutions, continues to drive the success and growth of Fergus Flanagan Architects.
