Who is that knocking on the door?!

Norman Ormiston of Konic Doors, in conversation with Build & Renovate

Story Highlights
  • “As our doors are made from Accoya wood, they come without any of the usual timber related headaches!”
  • “Technology is also coming into play now and homeowners are looking for fingerprint recognition.”
  • “We want to create and maintain a brand that is affiliated with quality.”

KONIC DOORS are the market leader in solid insulated timber doors, producing environmentally friendly doors from sustainably sourced wood.

They have been in operation for more than 25 years, based in Kells, County Meath.

When you choose KONIC DOORS, you have a variety of choices to choose from including 40 door styles, colours, a large range of door furniture in many finishes, a range of glass types as well as moulding and panel types. All doors can be tailored as best as possible to the customer’s design.

KONIC DOORS capabilities include; manufacturing of up to 1150mm wide x 2400mm high single door leaf, frame widths and heights up to 3000mm x 3000mm as standard, with bespoke door and frame design options available, factory spray painted and brush finishes available in any colour the customers want.

Our state of the art equipment coupled with the best crafts men and women give us the perfect door for any home.

The business has been faced with the same challenges as everyone else with constant raw material changes and energy costs. Labour shortages seem to be the bigger challenge, it was the price of materials previously whereas now it is getting someone to do the work which is impossible, explained Norman Ormiston

“The price of general labour on houses being renovated is costing a fortune on top of the price of the materials. Luckily, the business is still very busy despite these challenges and it seems to be when someone commits to changing their door, they generally do go through with the order.

“We have new door designer software going on the website in the next few weeks which will help the homeowner decide on what they want whilst also helping our retail partners to sell the product. As our doors are made from Accoya wood, they come without any of the usual timber related headaches!

Accoya wood is a sustainably produced wood making it fully sustainable, with the added bonus of insulated panels. Our doors come with great energy ratings,’’ enthused Mr Ormiston.

“The design options are endless when it comes to our doors as they are assembled with different components in comparison to other door types. Customers can have a door that is bespoke as they want it. We are receiving a range of different door style requests lately from American type doors featuring black iron handles to sleek flat doors that give a very minimalistic feel or Gothic and period styles which can be matched very well.

Technology is also coming into play now and homeowners are looking for fingerprint recognition as they don’t want to use keys or have to root for keys especially when their hands are full. This technology is incredibly convenient and there is battery back up in the event of a power cut.

“KONIC DOORS was very much always known as a traditional or period style door business where now the technical advancements in the wood and production equipment is allowing us to produce contemporary styles.

In terms of the future of KONIC DOORS?
“Going forward, we want to create and maintain a brand that is affiliated with quality, the wood we use for the doors is guaranteed for 50 years. We want to be known as a tried and tested product as well as continuing to grow the business to 10 or 12 retail partners that can support customers across the country of Ireland. We aim to replicate that model further afield. Getting the product right and having it perfect every time is our number one priority,’’ concluded Mr Ormiston.
